Italian Consul General Builds Bridges with the Pittsburgh Italian Community
Pittsburgh is a city of bridges, around six hundred of them, spanning rivers and valleys, joining geographically separated neighborhoods. And on March 31, 2023, another bridge was erected in Pittsburgh joining its Italian and Italian-American communities to the nation of Italy. Istituto Mondo Italiano, led by the Executive Director Viviana Altieri, hosted the visit of Italian Consul General Dr. Cristiana Mele, the official representative of the Italian government based in Philadelphia.
The morning reception and seminar took place at Istituto Mondo Italiano's headquarters in Pittsburgh in Regent Square with the attendance of the members of the Pittsburgh's Italian community and representatives from the many businesses, healthcare organizations, cultural and educational institutions with connections to Pittsbugrh's Italian community.
They included UPMC, Highmark, Compunetix, University of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University School of Pharmacy, Buchanan Ingersoll Rooney, Tenova, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Opera, FisherArch, La Prima Espresso, Maiello Brungo and Maiello, Sophos, and ChorusCall.
Following the introduction of Dr. Mele, Ms. Altieri gave a presentation on Istituto Mondo Italiano's mission to promote Italy and Italian culture through its many programs, including Italian language classes, cultural events, business consulting services, interpretation services to hospitals and courts, dual citizenship services, cooking classes and community outreach and volunteering in the elderly Italian immigrant population.
This was followed by introductions by each participant, describing his/her connection to Italy. Several participants proposed initiatives to the Consul General related to the support of the Italian community by the Italian government. Fabrizio Rambaldi of Tenova, an engineering company involved in the development of technology for metal processing, proposed that Pittsburgh be designated by the Italian government as the hub for Italian companies in the metal processing industry.
The owner of La Prima Espresso, Sam Patti, requested that the Consult General should advocate for direct flights between Pittsburgh and Italy as there are many companies located here that have strong affiliations with Italy.
This was the first opportunity for the Pittsburgh Italian and Italian-American communities to directly interact with a representative from the Italian government. Dr. Mele was very receptive to all the concerns and comments and encouraged a continuining dialogue between Pittsburgh and the Italian Consulate.
Most certainly another bridge has been built in Pittsburgh, one that spans 4,564 miles to Rome!
