In 1992, the Italian Government has instituted a language requirement for those individuals applying for Dual Citizenship of a minimum B1 level/Citizenship.
Approved Certifications are: CILS (from the University of Siena) or equivalent certification from the University of Perugia or University of Roma Tre.

WHAT IS CILS Certification?
CILS - Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language by University for Foreigners of Siena
The CILS certification is a qualification issued by the university which declares the level of linguistic and communicative competences in Italian as a foreign language. The exams are designed to assess how learners use Italian to communicate in real-life situations.
The CILS Certification is offered in 6 different levels: from beginners (A1-A2), to intermediate (B1-B2) to proficient (C1-C2). Mondo Italiano can assist you in assessing your level and prepare you to take the test with its Test Review Courses as well as PREPARATORY Courses. (see below).
